Few people gave Ghana a realistic chance of making headlines at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Entering the tournament ranked 73rd in the world, the Black Stars were widely viewed as outsiders in a group featuring football heavyweight England National Football Team and talented European opposition.

Two matches later, Ghana has become one of the tournament’s most talked-about teams.

Following a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama National Football Team and a hard-fought goalless draw against England, the Black Stars now sit second in Group L with four points and have put themselves in a strong position to reach the Round of 32. For Ghanaian supporters, the dream is very much alive.

A Statement Performance Against England

While the win over Panama provided a perfect start, it was Ghana’s disciplined display against England that truly captured attention. Facing one of the tournament favorites, the Black Stars produced a resilient defensive performance that frustrated England’s star-studded attack throughout the match.

England dominated possession for long periods and attempted to impose themselves on the game, but Ghana’s organized backline consistently denied clear-cut opportunities. Even prolific striker Harry Kane struggled to find space against a Ghanaian defense determined to protect its goal.

By the final whistle, Ghana had earned a valuable 0-0 draw and demonstrated that they are capable of competing with elite opposition.

Carlos Queiroz’s Influence Showing

Much of the praise has gone to coach Carlos Queiroz, whose tactical approach has transformed Ghana into one of the most disciplined teams in the competition.

Against England, the strategy was clear: remain compact, stay organized, and force England to work for every opportunity. The plan worked almost perfectly.

Tournament football is often decided not by flashy performances but by defensive discipline and tactical execution. Ghana’s ability to frustrate stronger opponents could prove crucial as the competition progresses.

The Croatia Challenge Awaits

Attention now turns to Ghana’s final group-stage fixture against Croatia National Football Team on June 27. The stakes could hardly be higher. A victory would likely guarantee qualification and could even see Ghana finish top of the group depending on other results.

Considering the expectations before the tournament began, that would represent a remarkable achievement for the Black Stars. Players and fans alike understand that the job is not finished, but confidence is undoubtedly growing.

Fans Dare to Dream

Across Ghana and among supporters worldwide, celebrations have already begun. Social media has been flooded with memes, dance videos, match reactions, and optimistic predictions about how far the team can go.

Many fans have embraced the familiar football chant of “bringing it home,” while others have praised the team’s fighting spirit and determination. The excitement reflects a growing belief that Ghana may be capable of producing one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.

Opinion: Ghana Is Playing With Nothing to Lose

What makes Ghana so dangerous right now is that they are playing without the pressure that burdens many of the tournament favorites.

England is expected to qualify. Croatia is expected to compete. Ghana was expected by many to struggle. Instead, the Black Stars have already exceeded expectations.

That freedom allows them to play with confidence, discipline, and belief. Every positive result increases momentum, while opponents face increasing pressure not to become the next team embarrassed by Ghana’s resilience.

The draw against England may not have been the most entertaining match of the tournament, but it sent a powerful message: Ghana is not here simply to participate.

The Black Stars are here to compete.

If they can carry the same defensive organization and determination into the Croatia match, there is every reason for Ghanaian fans to believe that the knockout rounds are within reach.

And if that happens, the rest of the football world may finally have to stop calling Ghana underdogs and start treating them as genuine contenders.
