5 Proven Ways to Slash Your ECG Electricity Bill and Save Money Every Month

For many households in Ghana, the electricity bill can take a noticeable part of the monthly budget. When the bill suddenly goes up, it is easy to blame the meter or assume that electricity tariffs are the only reason.

But your electricity consumption is also affected by the appliances you use, how long you use them and the habits you develop at home.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has previously highlighted high-consumption appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators and water heaters as major contributors to electricity bills. ECG has also warned about electricity consumed by appliances left on standby, sometimes referred to as “vampire loads.”

The good news is that there are practical steps you can take to reduce unnecessary consumption.

Here are five ways to start.

1. Pay Attention to Your Biggest Electricity Users

Not every appliance in your home consumes electricity at the same rate.

A small LED bulb and an electric water heater, for example, can have very different power demands.

ECG’s own energy-use guidance gives examples ranging from low-power LED bulbs to much higher-power appliances such as air conditioners, water heaters, irons and cooking equipment.

This means you should start by identifying the appliances that are likely to have the biggest effect on your consumption.

Common examples include:

  • Air conditioners
  • Electric water heaters
  • Electric cookers
  • Refrigerators and freezers
  • Irons
  • Electric kettles
  • Washing machines
  • Deep fryers

You do not necessarily have to stop using these appliances.

Instead, think about how often and how long you use them.

For example, if an appliance does not need to remain switched on for several hours, turn it off when you are finished using it.

2. Use Your Air Conditioner More Efficiently

Air conditioners can be significant electricity users, particularly when they operate for long periods.

If you use an air conditioner regularly, small changes in your routine can help reduce unnecessary consumption.

Start by making sure the room is properly closed while the air conditioner is running.

Leaving doors or windows open allows cooled air to escape, forcing the unit to work harder.

You should also keep the air conditioner’s filters clean and have the unit properly maintained.

Other useful habits include:

  • Avoiding unnecessarily low temperature settings
  • Turning the unit off when the room is no longer occupied
  • Closing curtains or blinds when strong sunlight is entering the room
  • Keeping doors and windows closed while cooling
  • Servicing the air conditioner when necessary

If you only need cooling for a short period, avoid leaving the air conditioner running simply because you are accustomed to having it on.

Avoid these: 5 Appliances That Can Increase Your Electricity Bill

3. Don’t Leave Appliances Running When You Are Not Using Them

One of the easiest habits to change is leaving appliances switched on when nobody is using them.

A television may remain on while nobody is watching it. A computer may remain running after work. Chargers and other electronics may also stay plugged in unnecessarily.

ECG has specifically warned about standby electricity consumption from devices such as televisions, chargers and gaming consoles.

Make it a habit to switch off appliances when you are finished with them.

You can also unplug equipment that does not need to remain connected to electricity.

This is particularly useful when leaving home for an extended period.

However, some appliances such as refrigerators and freezers are designed to remain connected continuously, so do not unplug appliances simply for the sake of it. Consider their function and manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Be Smarter About Your Iron and Other Heat-Producing Appliances

Appliances that produce heat can consume significant amounts of electricity.

Irons, electric kettles, water heaters, electric cookers and similar appliances can therefore deserve special attention.

One simple habit is to avoid switching an appliance on repeatedly throughout the day when you can complete the task in one session.

For example, instead of ironing one or two pieces of clothing every day, you may choose to iron several clothes at once.

You should also avoid leaving a heating appliance running while you are doing something else.

The goal isn’t to stop using these appliances.

It is to reduce unnecessary operating time.

5. Replace Inefficient Lighting and Old Appliances

If you still have older, less-efficient bulbs in your home, consider replacing them with LED lighting.

ECG itself advises customers that changing to LED bulbs can help save energy.

You should also pay attention to very old electrical appliances.

An old appliance may continue to work but use electricity less efficiently than a newer, more efficient model.

That does not mean you should immediately throw away every old appliance in your home.

Instead, consider its energy consumption when it eventually needs replacement.

If an appliance is faulty, unusually hot, making strange noises or performing poorly, have it inspected rather than continuing to use it indefinitely.

How to Know Where Your Electricity Is Going

If your electricity bill is higher than expected, don’t simply guess which appliance is responsible.

Start by looking at your daily routine.

Ask yourself:

  • How many hours does the air conditioner run each day?
  • How often do I use an electric water heater?
  • How long does the refrigerator or freezer operate?
  • How frequently do I iron?
  • Do I leave the television or decoder on when nobody is watching?
  • Are chargers and other devices constantly plugged in?
  • Are lights left on in empty rooms?
  • Are there appliances that remain on overnight?

ECG has published guidance explaining how consumers can calculate energy consumption by looking at an appliance’s power rating and the number of hours it is used.

Understanding this can help you identify which habits are contributing most to your bill.

What If Your Bill Suddenly Becomes Much Higher?

A higher electricity bill does not automatically mean that your meter is faulty.

ECG explains that bills are based on energy consumed together with applicable statutory charges, and advises customers to conserve energy when consumption rises.

Start by checking whether your electricity usage has changed.

For example, perhaps:

  • You have started using an air conditioner more frequently.
  • More people are now living in the house.
  • You purchased a new high-power appliance.
  • You are using an electric heater more often.
  • You have been spending more time at home.

If your consumption does not explain the increase and you suspect a meter or billing problem, contact ECG through its official customer-service channels rather than paying an unofficial person to investigate it.

ECG currently lists 0302 611 611 as its call-centre number and provides enquiry and complaint channels through its website.

A Simple Monthly Electricity-Saving Routine

You don’t need to change everything in one day.

Try this simple routine:

Every day:
Switch off lights and appliances that are not being used.

Every week:
Check whether appliances are being left on unnecessarily.

Every month:
Compare your electricity consumption with previous months and think about what changed.

When replacing an appliance:
Consider energy efficiency alongside the purchase price.

Small changes can become significant when they are repeated throughout the year.

Final Thoughts

Reducing your ECG electricity bill is not necessarily about living without the appliances you need.

It is about understanding where electricity is being used and eliminating waste where possible.

Start with the biggest users in your home, use air conditioners and heating appliances more carefully, switch off unnecessary equipment, improve your lighting and pay attention to older appliances.

Most importantly, don’t assume that a higher bill is caused by only one factor.

Your electricity consumption is influenced by your appliances, usage patterns and household habits. Understanding those factors is the first step towards getting better control of your monthly electricity expenses.

For billing, meter or service concerns, always use ECG’s official customer-service channels rather than relying on unofficial individuals or social-media claims.
