Ghanaian Afro-dancehall star Stonebwoy has joined the nation in mourning the passing of Ya-Naa Abukari II, describing the late King as a visionary leader whose reign restored peace and unity to Dagbon.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on social media, Stonebwoy reflected on the immense impact the Ya-Naa had not only on the people of Dagbon but on Ghana as a whole. “I mourn the passing of Ya-Naa Abukari II, Overlord of Dagbon. His loss is felt across Dagbon and all of Ghana.”

A Leader Remembered for Peace

Stonebwoy praised the late monarch for guiding Dagbon through one of the most sensitive periods in its history. According to the musician, Ya-Naa Abukari II’s leadership helped restore unity and stability at a time when the kingdom needed healing the most.

“He was a leader of peace and vision. At Dagbon’s most fragile moment, he restored unity, healed divisions, and gave the Kingdom new hope and stability.” The tribute echoes the sentiments of many Ghanaians who have recognized the late King’s efforts in promoting reconciliation and strengthening traditional leadership.

A Personal Bond with Dagbon

Beyond expressing condolences, Stonebwoy also reflected on his personal connection with the people of Dagbon.

The award-winning musician recalled the warm reception he received from the kingdom, describing how he was welcomed as family and honored with the traditional title Dancehall Sapashini, meaning “The Warrior.” He expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying it remains one of the most meaningful honors of his career.

“I will never forget the love Dagbon showed me, welcoming me as family and honouring me with the title Dancehall Sapashini – The Warrior. For that, I am forever grateful.”

Condolences to the Kingdom

Stonebwoy concluded his message by extending his sympathies to the traditional leadership, the royal family, and the people of Dagbon as they mourn the loss of their revered King.

He prayed for strength and comfort during the difficult period, ending his tribute with a simple but emotional farewell: “My condolences to the Chiefs, the royal family, and the people of Dagbon. God grant you strength during this difficult time. Rest well, Ya-Naa.”

Opinion: A Tribute That Goes Beyond Music

Stonebwoy’s message is more than a celebrity condolence—it reflects the respect many public figures have for Ghana’s traditional institutions and the role they play in preserving peace, culture, and national unity.

By recalling the honor bestowed upon him by the people of Dagbon, Stonebwoy reminded Ghanaians that the relationship between artists and traditional leaders can extend beyond ceremonies and titles. It can be built on mutual respect and shared values.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the country, Ya-Naa Abukari II will be remembered not only as the Overlord of Dagbon but also as a leader whose commitment to reconciliation left a lasting mark on the kingdom and Ghana’s history.

May his legacy of peace continue to inspire future generations.
