The plan was described as a forward-looking roadmap by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie. In a speech read on her behalf by the Director of Culture and Creative Arts, Divine Kwame Owusu Ansah, she emphasized that the initiative seeks to restore the Theatre’s prestige, enhance transparency, and ensure accountability to all stakeholders.

“This strategic plan will not only promote Ghana’s rich cultural heritage but also support artistic expression and create sustainable economic opportunities, particularly within the tourism sector,” the Minister noted.

Strategic Objectives

At the launch event, Acting Executive Director Henry Malm highlighted the collaborative process behind the plan, which involved the Theatre’s board, management, consultants, and industry stakeholders.

He emphasized that the initiative aims to equip the institution with modern skills, technology, and financing, enabling it to thrive in a digital and competitive cultural environment. Prior consultations with staff and creative professionals were also conducted to ensure smooth implementation.

Board Chair Korkor Amarteifio reflected on the Theatre’s longstanding contribution to nurturing top-tier Ghanaian artists and creative professionals. She noted that the strategic plan focuses on:

  • Service excellence
  • Expanded access to cultural experiences
  • Creative skills development
  • Long-term sustainability

It also seeks to address critical challenges such as institutional relevance, accountability, and financial resilience.

Embracing Technology and Global Standards

Consultant Olubunmi Ajayi highlighted the importance of evolving in response to rapid technological advances. The plan envisions a digitally-enabled, globally competitive National Theatre aligned with Ghana’s national priorities, including job creation, youth empowerment, and the growth of the creative economy.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Talent development and arts education
  • Audience expansion and community engagement
  • Staff capacity building and professional development
  • Strengthening partnerships with the private sector, academia, and creative communities
  • Boosting internal revenue generation through innovative initiatives

A Catalyst for National Development

The strategic plan positions the National Theatre of Ghana as a modern, inclusive, and financially sustainable institution, dedicated to making the arts more accessible while showcasing Ghanaian culture on the global stage.

By emphasizing creativity, digital innovation, and stakeholder collaboration, the Theatre aims to drive cultural growth, support local talent, and contribute meaningfully to the national economy.

“This initiative reaffirms our commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural sector that benefits both artists and audiences across Ghana and beyond,” said Acting Executive Director Henry Malm.
