The National Theatre of Ghana has unveiled its ambitious 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, aimed at modernizing operations, strengthening institutional capacity, and repositioning the Theatre as a leading cultural hub both locally and internationally.
The plan was described as a forward-looking roadmap by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie. In a speech read on her behalf by the Director of Culture and Creative Arts, Divine Kwame Owusu Ansah, she emphasized that the initiative seeks to restore the Theatre’s prestige, enhance transparency, and ensure accountability to all stakeholders.
“This strategic plan will not only promote Ghana’s rich cultural heritage but also support artistic expression and create sustainable economic opportunities, particularly within the tourism sector,” the Minister noted.
Strategic Objectives
At the launch event, Acting Executive Director Henry Malm highlighted the collaborative process behind the plan, which involved the Theatre’s board, management, consultants, and industry stakeholders.
He emphasized that the initiative aims to equip the institution with modern skills, technology, and financing, enabling it to thrive in a digital and competitive cultural environment. Prior consultations with staff and creative professionals were also conducted to ensure smooth implementation.
Board Chair Korkor Amarteifio reflected on the Theatre’s longstanding contribution to nurturing top-tier Ghanaian artists and creative professionals. She noted that the strategic plan focuses on:
- Service excellence
- Expanded access to cultural experiences
- Creative skills development
- Long-term sustainability
It also seeks to address critical challenges such as institutional relevance, accountability, and financial resilience.
Embracing Technology and Global Standards
Consultant Olubunmi Ajayi highlighted the importance of evolving in response to rapid technological advances. The plan envisions a digitally-enabled, globally competitive National Theatre aligned with Ghana’s national priorities, including job creation, youth empowerment, and the growth of the creative economy.
Key areas of focus include:
- Talent development and arts education
- Audience expansion and community engagement
- Staff capacity building and professional development
- Strengthening partnerships with the private sector, academia, and creative communities
- Boosting internal revenue generation through innovative initiatives

The strategic plan positions the National Theatre of Ghana as a modern, inclusive, and financially sustainable institution, dedicated to making the arts more accessible while showcasing Ghanaian culture on the global stage.
By emphasizing creativity, digital innovation, and stakeholder collaboration, the Theatre aims to drive cultural growth, support local talent, and contribute meaningfully to the national economy.
