Lucescu reportedly resigned on Thursday after falling ill ahead of a training session. According to multiple reports, he was later hospitalized and is believed to have suffered a heart attack on Friday morning.

In an emotional statement, the Romanian Football Federation expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing him as “an absolute legend” whose legacy will endure for generations.

“Our football loses not only a brilliant tactician, but a mentor, a visionary, and a national symbol who carried the tricolour to the highest peaks of global success,” the federation said.

Lucescu’s connection with the national team spanned decades. He first managed Romania between 1981 and 1986, before returning for a second stint in 2024. His final match in charge came on March 26, when Romania suffered a narrow 1-0 play-off defeat to Turkey national football team, missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A Remarkable Managerial Legacy

Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished managers in European football, Lucescu enjoyed a career that lasted nearly five decades.

He managed several top clubs across Europe, including:

  • Inter Milan
  • Galatasaray
  • Beşiktaş
  • Shakhtar Donetsk
  • Zenit Saint Petersburg
  • Dynamo Kyiv

His managerial journey began 47 years ago at Corvinul Hunedoara, marking the start of an extraordinary football career defined by success, innovation, and longevity.

Following news of his death, several former clubs paid tribute. Galatasaray praised him as a “winning manager” who helped shape the club’s history, while Inter Milan extended heartfelt condolences to his family.

From Player to National Icon

Before his managerial success, Lucescu also had a distinguished playing career. He earned 64 caps for Romania and captained the national team during the 1970 FIFA World Cup.

Romanian Football Federation president Razvan Burleanu described his death as a devastating loss for both the country and the sport.

“It is a black day for Romania and for world football. Mircea Lucescu was not just a coach, but a life teacher for entire generations of players.”

A Lasting Legacy

Mircea Lucescu’s impact on football extends far beyond trophies and results. He is remembered as a mentor, a visionary leader, and a symbol of excellence whose influence shaped countless players and teams across Europe.

His passing marks the end of an era—but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations in the world of football.
