MTN Ghana’s Massive Fibre Price Cuts Could Change Home Internet in Ghana

For years, one of the biggest complaints among internet users in Ghana has been the high cost of reliable broadband. Whether for remote work, online learning, content creation, gaming, or streaming, many households have struggled to access high-speed internet at affordable rates.

That is why the recent announcement by MTN Ghana regarding significant reductions in its fibre broadband prices has generated considerable excitement among subscribers.

Effective June 17, 2026, the telecommunications giant slashed prices across several of its unlimited fibre packages, with some plans seeing reductions of up to 70%.

What Has Changed?

The most eye-catching adjustment is the 100 Mbps unlimited fibre package, which has dropped dramatically from GHS 987 per month to GHS 299 per month.

MTN has also introduced higher-speed options designed for households and businesses with greater internet demands:

100 Mbps Unlimited – GHS 299
300 Mbps Unlimited – GHS 444
500 Mbps Unlimited – GHS 999

The company has promoted the changes with the slogan “Prices Down, Speeds Up,” encouraging customers to access the new packages through its mobile app and service channels.

Government’s Role in the Reduction

The announcement was welcomed by many consumers after Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George indicated that discussions between the government and MTN contributed to the decision.

According to the minister, public concerns about internet affordability played a major role in the engagement process.

As digital services become increasingly important to education, business, healthcare, and entertainment, lowering the cost of broadband aligns with Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda.

A Win for Remote Workers and Students

The timing of the price reductions could not be better. More Ghanaians are working remotely, attending online classes, running digital businesses, and consuming streaming content than ever before.

Previously, many households found high-speed fibre packages beyond their budgets. The new pricing structure makes broadband significantly more accessible to middle-income households that may have previously relied solely on mobile data.

For students attending virtual classes, freelancers working with international clients, and content creators uploading large files, affordable fibre internet can be a game changer.

Early Reactions Have Been Positive

Initial reactions from subscribers have been overwhelmingly positive. Many users have praised the affordability of the new packages, while others have shared speed test results reportedly approaching 280 Mbps on fibre connections.

The reductions have also sparked conversations about increased competition within Ghana’s internet service provider market, with consumers hoping other providers will respond with similar pricing adjustments.

The Rural Connectivity Challenge Remains

While the announcement is undoubtedly good news, it also highlights a challenge that remains unresolved. Fibre broadband is primarily available in major urban areas such as Accra and other large towns where infrastructure already exists.

Many rural communities still depend heavily on mobile internet services, where affordability and network quality continue to be concerns. As a result, some observers argue that Ghana’s digital transformation efforts must address both fibre expansion and mobile data pricing if the benefits are to reach the entire population.

Opinion: This Is the Kind of Competition Consumers Have Been Waiting For

In my view, MTN’s fibre price reduction is one of the most consumer-friendly telecom announcements Ghana has seen in recent years.

The difference between paying nearly GHS 1,000 for a 100 Mbps package and paying GHS 299 is enormous. For many households, that gap is the difference between considering fibre internet a luxury and seeing it as a practical necessity.

The move acknowledges a reality that many consumers have been emphasizing for years: affordable internet is no longer optional in a modern economy.

However, the true success of this initiative will depend on two things. First, maintaining consistent service quality as subscriber numbers increase. Lower prices are excellent, but customers will expect reliable speeds and stable connections.

Second, expanding access beyond major cities. Affordable fibre can only transform lives if people can actually subscribe to it. For now, though, MTN deserves credit for making a bold move that could reshape Ghana’s home broadband market.

If competitors respond with similar offers, consumers may finally begin enjoying faster internet at prices that make sense for everyday households. And in an increasingly digital world, that is a win for everyone.
