Many individuals eat late at night simply because they have no other option. One common reason is that many can’t get home from work until late, so they often eat dinner after it’s already too late. People in this situation frequently don’t have the luxury of waiting for their bellies to finish digesting a large meal before retiring for the night.

This can have a number of undesirable implications on health, including a higher risk of obesity, gastroesophageal reflux, sleep disruption, and, in the worst cases, indigestion. Although most individuals are aware that certain foods should be avoided in the morning, a surprising number of them are unaware that other foods should be avoided late at night, particularly within that hours before bed.

1. starch-rich foods

Late-night eaters should stay away from starchy meals like potatoes, pasta, & rice. This is because a rapid spike in blood sugar and insulin levels results from the body’s rapid conversion of starch in foods into sugar. Dinner is not the time to eat starchy foods. During sleep, the body is now at rest and therefore does not require energy, so any excess sugar is stored as fat. This can lead to weight gain.

2. Pepper-flavored foods

You should try to fulfill your appetites for spicy foods earlier that day to avoid the harmful effects of eating them so late at night. If you eat something spicy and then go to bed soon after, you can wake up with heartburn. Eating spicy food might irritate your bladder, causing you to get up several times during the night to go to the bathroom.

3. High-glycemic foods like cakes, pizzas, sodas, granulated sugar, fruit juices, breads, and most breakfast cereals should be avoided after dinner. This is because these foods are digested and absorbed rapidly. When you sleep, your body can mend and rejuvenate itself, so whatever sugar you consume will be turned into fat.

4. Fatty foods

If you care about your health, you should also avoid eating fatty foods late at night. Since they are difficult to digest and can make GI issues worse, they shouldn’t be consumed late at night. The trans fat found in fatty foods is bad for your heart, and eating too much of it can lead to health problems. So, reduce your consumption of meals that are loaded with vegetable oil & palm oil.
