Ghanaian socialite Debora Vanessa, popularly known as Sister Debby, has voiced her displeasure with Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), over his recent comments on the anti-LGBTQ bill.

On November 13, 2024, Sister Debby took to X to call Asiedu Nketiah a hypocrite for criticizing President Akufo-Addo’s refusal to sign the bill. She highlighted a 2015 incident where Asiedu Nketiah wore a women’s fur coat during an official trip to Germany, questioning his moral authority to condemn LGBTQ+ activities.

“A Ghanaian man who in 2015 wore a women’s coat during an official visit to Germany wants an anti-LGBTQ bill that will jail people for cross-dressing to become law. Hypocrisy!” she posted.

Background

At a recent NDC campaign rally in Kumasi, Asiedu Nketiah criticized President Akufo-Addo for hesitating to sign the anti-LGBTQI bill. He emphasized that religious leaders in Ghana, including Muslims, strongly oppose homosexuality, and the NDC introduced the bill to address this issue.

“The NDC has shown its disapproval of homosexuality in the country, which is why we introduced a bill against it. Even Muslims and other religious leaders are fighting against LGBTQ. But Akufo-Addo has refused to sign the bill,” he stated.

Three years ago, Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George and other parliament members introduced the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which has faced several delays and has not received President Akufo-Addo’s approval. The bill is currently under review by the Supreme Court.
