Recently, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah announced that there had been an increment in allowances for the spouses of the President and the Vice-President. He disclosed that a committee recommended that the payment of the spouses of the President must be made formal. Subsequently, the parliament approved of that recommendation.
This news received massive reactions from Ghanaians. Top influential personalities have publicly spoken against this development. The National Youth Organizer filed a lawsuit against this action. Today, the former President, John Dramani Mahama shared a news post on his official Facebook page from the johnmahama.org website.
He expressed his total disagreement with the payment of salaries to the First Ladies. This was the headline of the news post. Mahama stated that he does not agree with the recommendation of the committee and the approval from Parliament.
An excerpt of John Mahama from the news post reads; “The news, particularly at this time of austerity, has generated some level of outrage among the populace, and I can understand the anger of those opposing the recommendation of the Ntiamoa-Baidu Committee and its subsequent approval by parliament. And why did Parliament also approve, as had been reported, this recommendation without a review?”
