The site of Glasgow’s iconic Archaos nightclub could bel be turned into student accommodation, developers have said.

The former city centre hotspot, known for its off-kilter parties, under 18 and student nights, closed in 2007 and had long been rumoured to be reopening as a nightclub — but plans were reportedly shelved due to the “poor state” the venue had been left in and the high cost of refurbishing the site.

Property developer CA Ventures is planning to develop the spacious ground floor into retail or other commercial uses, with the floors above being utilised to tackle the lack of student halls in the area.

With a reputation for wild nights, actor Charlie Sheen was spotted at Archaos in 1997 partying with footballer Paul Gascoigne.

Glaswegian Hudson Mohawke told Vice in 2015 that Archaos was his first ever club experience, allured by its “notorious, nasty under-18 nights”.

“At that stage I was already a big hard house and happy hardcore person, and I’d also done loads of scratch contests — but they were more like concerts.” said Mohawke.

“Archaos was my first experience of being in a club. It had this weird layout — there was a dancefloor in the middle and the balconies all around the edges. It also wasn’t the sort of club where the DJs were trying to mix, they’d just sling another track on like it was a school disco.”

A representative from CA Ventures said: “These exciting proposals represent a significant investment in Glasgow and will serve to regenerate a currently derelict site.

“They will serve to provide much-needed student accommodation in a building which has lain empty since 2007 and which, due to its condition, provide limited options for redevelopment.

“We envisage this site as a perfect opportunity to add to the vibrant community of students currently living in central Glasgow, benefitting local shops.”

University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University and City of Glasgow College would all have students staying in the accommodations, according to proposals.
