Lighthouse Chapel International’s founder, Bishop Dr. Dag Heward-Mills, has apologized to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, after a meeting he had with some pastors was recorded and subsequently leaked to the general public.
In the recording, the religious leader is heard literally berating the role of the Asante monarch and tagging him as useless. He questioned the legacy the King would leave behind since there was nothing he had done to be remembered for.
In the recording, it was obvious he could not wrap his mind around all the various celebrations which go on in relation to the Kingship and everything about it.
Naturally and as expected many people, especially Ashantis expressed their anger at the content of the recording with some groups even threatening to attack or lock up Lighthouse Chapel branches in Kumasi, the seat of the Asantehene.
The religious leader however has rendered an apology to the Asantehene, explaining that the message was preached nearly 20 years ago but had been taken out of context maliciously circulated.
He stated:
“I am deeply saddened that a message I shared at a conference nearly 20 years ago, has been taken out of its context and circulated by persons who have previously declared that they will maliciously cause our churches in Kumasi to be closed down”.
“I wish to apologize to His Majesty Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II for any disrespect, insult or harm caused him or his royal court. Please accept my profound apologies for the statements I made,” excerpts of the statement read.
He retracted by saying the accomplishments of his majesty Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II are known and acknowledged.
Manhyia Palace is yet to react.
