Most Ghanaians enjoy eating waakye, a local dish prepared by cooking rice and beans with red sorghum leaves. The leaves add flavour and give waakye its distinctive reddish-brown colour. The leaves are also rich in antioxidants, which in turn can be good for human health.

Antioxidants can protect cells in the body from damage and are thought to help fight a range of illnesses like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Waakye is not only a source of antioxidants, but also rich in fibre.

Fibre decreases the rate of constipation as it has a significant role in regulating bowel movements. It also contains various nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Waakye has all the necessary nutrients to produce energy.

Waakye is mostly eaten alongside fish, egg, meat and salad. These also contain nutrients and add more nutritional value to waakye. Fish is known to be a source of protein and salad contains nutrients like vitamin A and B vitamins.
