Nigerian music sensation Tems has encouraged upcoming artistes to remain true to themselves and resist pressure to change their unique sound or style.

In a recent BBC interview, the Grammy Award-winning singer — born Temilade Openiyi — credited her success to authenticity and bold self-belief.

“How I got here is through authenticity and being audacious, believing in yourself so much. Even when people tell you to change your sound or your style, you can look at them and say no,” Tems said.

The “Me & U” hitmaker admitted that her refusal to conform cost her several early opportunities, including potential record deals.

“If it meant not being signed, I was okay with not being signed. I went to a couple of places that didn’t sign me, and I was okay with that, because I love music,” she explained.

Tems’ journey to global recognition — with multiple awards, chart-topping hits, and a Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance — stands as proof that staying authentic can lead to lasting success in the music industry.
