William Ato Essien, the former CEO of the now-defunct Capital Bank, is among the numerous prisoners who have been pardoned by outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in an exercise of his constitutional prerogative of mercy.
The action complies with the Constitution’s Article 72(1).
The decision, which marks the end of the year with a gesture of forgiveness and reconciliation, is part of a larger push to grant clemency to these prisoners, according to a letter dated December 31, 2024.
