Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) have banned Russian clubs and national teams from all tournaments.
Athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus have been banned from all international contests, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Russia’s men will miss their World Cup play-off matches next month and their women will miss the European Championship this summer.
Away from football, Uefa has discontinued its partnership with Russian energy behemoth Gazprom.
A joint statement from FIFA and UEFA said: “Football stands in complete sympathy with all those impacted in Ukraine.”
“Both presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will quickly improve, allowing football to once again be a vehicle for human solidarity and peace.”
