Many people like to say there are no professionals who are rude like nurses. But nurses are actually not bad people at all. What if the reason why people, especially patients say nurses are rude is because they want special treatment?

It seems that there’s no respect among nurses and patients and disrespectful behaviour chills communication and collaboration, undercuts individual contributions to care, undermines staff morale, increases staff resignations and absenteeism, creates an unhealthy or hostile work environment, causes some to abandon their profession, and ultimately harms patients.

These behaviours have been linked to adverse events, medical errors, compromises in patient safety, and even patient mortality.

Both patients and healthcare workers need to respect one another and stop pointing fingers. If you wonder why almost everything that nurses do get criticized the answer is I don’t know.

The hypercriticism against them is not healthy. When we are ill or in need of medical attention, healthcare workers prioritize us. Katlego Phiri, one of the South African nurses that recently took to social media to post her pictures was told to stop taking pictures and attend patients.

“Who’s attending patients when you guys are busy taking pictures?” a man asked.

The question is : aren’t nurses allowed to be free? Katlego was probably on a lunch break. No medical healthcare worker can go to a workplace and start taking pictures whenever he/she wants. There will be consequences. Their superiors will be mandated to issue written warnings if nurses are not fulfilling their duties.

Just because you are a nurse does not imply that you should stop posting on your social media accounts.

We are living in a world full of stereotypes. We have to put an end to criticism and start supporting one another. Stigmatised people experience anxiety which depletes their cognitive resources and leads to underperformance, confirmation of the stereotype and reinforcement of the fear.
