A lump behind the ear may form for many reasons. The most common triggers of a lump in this spot are infections and skin conditions. Less often, tumors can develop here. A lump behind the ear can grow anywhere between the top of the ear down to the lobe. These small- to medium-sized bumps might feel soft or hard.

1. Lipomas: Lipomas are a form of skin growth. The fatty lumps of tissue are soft and can be moved around beneath the skin. They can form in different parts of the body, including behind the ears. Lipomas do not cause harm but can cause pain. You usually do not have to treat a lipoma unless it is giving you worry. In this instance, you can have it removed.
2. Cysts: Cysts comprise dead skin cells and oils. They will feel soft to the touch and usually disappear on their own. Cysts are not often painful unless they suffer from Infection. If this occurs, antibiotics may be needed. If a cyst causes pain or is likely to trigger problems due to where it is located, it may need to be removed.
3. Keloids: You may encounter a lump behind the ear after piercing that does not go away. It is rare, but these lumps, known as keloids, happen in about 2.5% of ear-piercing cases. Importantly, these are scars that develop beyond the site of a piercing or wound. They may be hard to treat because keloids have a chance to grow back even after they are surgically removed.
