It has emerged that two staff of a top telecommunication company are among the five suspects who have been arrested in connection with the SIM swap fraud.

The two according to security agencies, are contract staff of the unnamed company but have access to their database which they used in aiding their accomplices to perpetuate the fraud.

This comes a few hours after cyber intelligence by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in collaboration with the Ghana Association of Banks arrested the fifth suspect in Accra on Wednesday.

Though security agencies will not divulge the names and details of the persons involved in this fraud, they disclosed that it is a cartel operating in various parts of the country with the staff of the telecommunication company playing lead roles.

Meanwhile, all five (5) suspects are expected to be arraigned before an Accra Court today while efforts are underway to apprehend the others who are said to be on the run.

It would be recalled that four (4) persons engaged in SIM swap fraud were on Tuesday arrested.

The suspects according to a representative of the Association of Bankers, Mr Ransford Nana Addo Jnr were picked up at various locations in the country for colluding and accessing the accounts of some Ghanaians.

It emerged that they managed to withdraw an amount of about GHC200,000 in their modus operandi before their cover was blown and subsequently apprehended by the security agency which was working closely with the banks.

SIM swap fraud occurs when fraudsters obtain a new SIM card from a person’s mobile service provider using the person’s registered phone number. They can get One Time Passwords (OTPs) and other alerts required to conduct financial transactions through the person’s bank account with the help of this new SIM.
